Start with the cause.
On the Coastal Bend, the air problem most homes fight is humidity. When the house feels sticky at 74 degrees, smells musty or grows mildew in the closets, the AC isn't pulling enough moisture out of the air, and that's often a system problem before it's an air-quality-product problem.
An oversized system that cools the house in ten minutes and shuts off never runs long enough to dry the air. A dirty coil, a leaky return duct pulling attic air into the house, or the fan set to run all the time can cause the same thing. Dust and allergy complaints often trace back to leaky returns and filters that don't fit.
So we look first, then talk options. Better filtration, sealing the return, fixing the airflow or changing how the system runs often solves more than any gadget. When an add-on makes sense for your house, we'll explain what it does and what it doesn't.
“Looking for a great a/c guy? I HIGHLY recommend Ridgewood Air Conditioning and Heating! My condensing unit was freezing up which normally is a sure sign of a refrigerant leak. I was preparing to have to pay to replace a coil or unit. Thomas advised me there were no leaks, and the unit was charged. However when the other a/c company installed the unit last summer, they did not account for the extra length in the copper lines (the manufacturer only accounts for 10ft of line) which calls for more refrigerant. Less than 2lbs of refrigerant and now it's working great! Thank you Thomas for your honesty, integrity, and knowledge!”

Questions about air quality
Why does my house feel humid even with the AC on?
Most often the system is oversized and short-cycles, or the fan is set to ON instead of AUTO, which puts moisture from the coil back into the house. Leaky return ducts pulling in humid attic air can do it too.
Why does my AC smell musty?
A musty smell usually means moisture and growth somewhere: on the coil, in the drain pan or in the ducts. We'll find where it's coming from and fix the source, not just cover the smell.
How often should I change my air filter?
Check it monthly and change it when it's dirty, which for most homes means every one to three months. Pets, construction dust and allergies mean more often.
What air quality options do you offer?
It depends on the house and the system, so we look before we recommend anything. Call or book a visit and we'll walk you through what fits your home.
